There’s been talks that WWE may be bringing back the King of the Ring tournament, which in all honesty wouldn’t be bad; as long as some changes can be implemented. Otherwise we’ll be stuck with another King that goes nowhere.
As we saw WWE held the last KOTR tournament in 2015 through the WWE Network which crowned Wade Barrett as our final King of the Ring winner. But what do you get from this exactly? A new name, a few more accessories to bring to the ring? I feel the KOTR should indicate an opportunity for the winner, otherwise what’s the point of winning it?
I’ve had this idea swimming in my head for a while now where WWE would introduce a KOTR championship, awarded to the KOTR winner in which he could exchange for an opportunity at the WWE Championship for his brand. Very similar to how the X-Division title is done in TNA but this championship is only available once a year and you have to win in a tournament to capture it.
There was talks of a championship a while ago in WWE (WWF at the time), hence why there was a belt made (cover photo for article) which Mabel held in 1995, but WWE just never went for it or showcased it.
In relation to the Royal Rumble & MITB, the KOTR Championship would be handed in for a decided timeline for a WWE title opportunity.
Here’s how the opportunities would work.
Royal Rumble – Main Event Spot At WrestleMania for the WWE Championship (Raw or SD)
Money in the Bank – Cash in at ANY time for a shot at the WWE Championship (Raw or SD)
King of the Ring – Trade in the championship for a shot at the WWE Championship (Raw or SD) at a PPV of your choosing (exempting WrestleMania)
It’s a simple concept which I believe could work in today’s market. Not only that the KOTR tournament could feature heavyweight and cruiser-weights from Raw & SD all competing for the shot at their TOP title on their brand.
This gives the KOTR competitors more enticement and gives us fans more of a reason why we should care for this tournament again. Yes, stars were made from this tournament in the past, but based on how WWE has run it lately it’s really become lack-luster. A change is needed and I believe now it the best time for it.
What are your thoughts, could this work?
